Take us on your journey
‘The Embrace’ was designed by Global Street Art artist Elle Koziupa for CrossCountry Trains to celebrate their vast network and the important part they play in connecting the UK. This 14m site-specific mural in Leeds honoured the city as a vibrant hub, celebrating its rich industrial heritage, cultural DNA and sporting chops.
Painted in August 2025, the mural was so well received, it was extended until November, reaching over 800,000 people and earning press coverage in Visit Leeds and Little Black Book. A collaboration with McCann Birmingham, the mural made art out of advertising, reminding us of the power of connection and that our railways are about much more than just transport.

The Design
Inspired by 19th century manuscripts, Elle’s design featured an ornate frame and classical vignettes to showcase iconic Leeds landmarks, sporting heroes and local communities. These frame the central couple, locked in an embrace, putting passengers’ stories at the heart of the city. The giant mural took Global Street Art’s team 5 days to paint.
A closer look at the mural reveals classical vignettes celebrating Leeds as a cultural hub; from celebrated local landmarks like Potts Clockmakers and Kirkgate Market to its docks, vital in the Industrial Revolution. There are references to Leeds’ sporting history – a pair of boxing gloves nod to the city’s long-held tradition alongside legendary Leeds United captain Billy Bremner. ‘The Embrace’ exemplifies the artistry and craft of hand-painted murals, demonstrating the impact Out of Home can have when culturally rooted in the heart of the city.
